Shamrocks & Shenanigans

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day. That means Ballista and every other American gets to use Irish stereotypes even more than they usually do. And isn't that what holidays are all about? So, things to do on March 17th...

  • Watch John Wayne as Sean Thornton, aka "Trooper Thorn", in The Quiet Man. It's the delightful story of a son of Erin come home to retire on the family farm. Oh, he's a champion boxer, too, so of course there is fighting. After watching you and your friends can discuss which part of the movie is better: the Duke stopping in the middle of a fight to have a pint or the local clergy placing bets on the winner. When you and your friends can't decide, have shot and fight about it.
  • Car Bomb.
  • Read A Monk Swimming by Malachy McCourt. Think Hemingway, but with that Irish flare for poetic prose (is that even possible?) Here's a little game: every time Malachy takes a drink in the book, do a shot yourself. Bonus points if you are still standing after chapter 2.

Okay, looking at the perfect pint has made Ballista thirsty and feeling the need to go roving in Cork or in Kilarny. But before that, a little trivia. Know why they call police vehicles Paddy Wagons? Because during the second half of the 19th Century, when the Irish were flooding into American cities, practically every police wagon (remember, horses - no cars yet) had a Paddy either driving it or locked up in the back!
